Cambois Beach 4th April 2015

Despite it still being early days for the fishing on this coast we headed out for a few hours last night to Cambois Beach.  I was hoping for a few bass or flounder.

I had to settle for a small codling, a few huge shore crab and some spectacular moon-lit views.
I attempted to get a few shots with my phone and was stunned when I got a few great shots.

I am extremely impressed at how well the Xperia Z1 performed hand-held in the darkness.

While out for a brief session on Cambois beach I tested out my Z1 to see how it fared taking night shots.

Not too bad considering this was while holding the phone....

St Mary's (Crisps Gulley) 06/09/14

I got out last night with Mark for 4 or so hours over low water.

There was not much sea forecast so I decided to see if we could pull any red codling out of the weeds around St Mary's Island.

When we arrived I made the last minute decision to head onto West Bay Skier and fish Crisps Gulley. The ground was as heavy as I remembered and I lost several sets of gear over the session.

As a consolation though I had some cracking bites on nearly all casts.  I managed a few decent Wrasse and a Short-spined Sea Scorpion for my troubles all of which were taking rag/lug baits.

Had I landed all the bites that I had I would have had maybe half a dozen more fish.  Considering how tough they were to hook I expect they were all likely Wrasse.  I was surprised not to see any codling that would normally be around at this time of year.

We fished until after dark and had the pleasure of a lovely moon-rise over the lighthouse.  Unfortunately all I had with me was my phone camera and could not capture any decent shots of the moon after the sun dropped.  Maybe next time.....

South Shields Pier 3rd August

After an unsuccessful trip to South Shields pier a few weeks back I decided to head back today with the heavy gear.
Conditions were favourable and we planned to fish up to and over High Water (2109) and into darkness.

It turned out to be a lovely mild evening even though it was a bit windy.

We fished several marks throughout the evening.  The scenery was fantastic as the sun set.  I even managed another photosphere (although still not perfect!)

We ended up fishing from the lighthouse at the end of the pier as darkness fell.

A few cod to 4lb had came in earlier in the evening from further down the pier.  Over the session I managed 4 fish to about 1.5lb which I was very happy with.

Blyth Beach 18th May 2014

After a scorching hot day yesterday I decided that I needed to get out onto a beach and get a short session in before the end of the weekend.

Fishing is still slow at this time of year but you can still pick up some Flounder, Plaice and a few other species from most marks.

We decided to head to Blyth Beach and fish the tide down to Low Water.  As it happened we did not stay until the tide turned as I had to get up for work this morning.  We picked up a few small flounder each and enjoyed some nice scenery as the sun set.

Thornback Hunt - Silloth Promenade 5th May 2014

Once species we had yet to catch ourselves was the Thornback Ray.

I had read reports of quite a few being caught on the West coast in the Silloth area.  This was a few hours drive from where we lived and so we decided to head over for a Bank Holiday session.
We initially planned on fishing during the day but changed the plans last minute and decided that fishing at night would be more productive.

We had Dogfish, some good sized Dab and whiting throughout the session.
A guy to our left had two decent Thornbacks of 4lb 4oz and 4lb 5oz on the run up to High Water.  Once he left at around 0330 we moved and started fishing in the area he had been.

We fished all night and a little before High Water (around 0400) Mark hooked into a big ray that bit through his hook length on the lift up the wall.
Disheartened we fished on and decided to stay an extra hour or so to try and catch ourselves a Thornback before the long drive back.

Lucky we did!

Last cast saw Mark land a cracking 10lb 2oz female.

I responded with one of my own weighing 10lb!

A new mark under our belts and for once a totally successful trip.

Fishing here is remarkably comfortable and I will definitely be making a return trip later this month

I managed to get out for a few hours last night with my dad.

Not much in the way of fish unfortunately but I did lose a BIG one......

With it being dark I only managed a few pics but the I thought that the one below was interesting  so I thought I would share.
